Tooth that Looks Gray, Yellow, Or Red Compared to Adjacent Teeth?
Does the appearance of a discolored tooth affect your smile? More importantly, it could be a sign of an underlying root canal disease, especially If only a single tooth is affected. At Cape Fear Endodontics, we not only address the infection but also tackle the discoloration of the tooth. Our internal bleaching, also known as single tooth whitening, can restore the natural shade of the tooth, so you can smile with confidence again.
How Is Internal Bleaching Performed?
Your endodontist will remove the source of discoloration and clean the internal surface of the tooth. The root canal system will be sealed to prevent leakage before a biocompatible bleaching agent is placed inside the tooth. Finally, the tooth will be sealed with a temporary filling, allowing the bleaching agent to take effect.
Meet one-on-one with your endodontist. Teeth can appear dark and stained for various reasons. Your consultation will include a specialized 3D x-ray (Cone Beam CT) of your teeth to understand the cause of your discoloration and ensure a highly accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan.

What are the Benefits of Single Tooth Whitening?
When only one tooth has become discolored, whitening the entire smile may not be necessary. Single tooth whitening offers a targeted approach that helps restore a more even, natural-looking smile while preserving the appearance of surrounding teeth. Some of the benefits of single tooth whitening include:
- More even tooth color
- Targeted treatment of one discolored tooth
- Natural-looking smile improvement
- Conservative cosmetic solution
- Preserves surrounding tooth shade
- Quick, in-office treatment in many cases
- Boosted confidence when smiling
- Customized treatment approach
Because discoloration can occur for different reasons, our team will first determine the underlying cause before recommending the most effective whitening technique for your specific situation.

Dr. Milhe, explained what he was going to do. If the tooth root couldn’t be cleaned it would need to be pulled. Shot me w novacane. And away went. He cleaned out the roots. Made I feeling OK. Great team.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get single tooth whitening if I’ve already had external teeth whitening?
Yes, and in fact this is a common scenario. External whitening works on the surface of all teeth, but it does not always correct discoloration that originates from within a single tooth. Internal bleaching is specifically designed to address that deeper type of staining. Our team will evaluate the difference in shade and help determine how to blend the treated tooth with the rest of your smile for a more uniform result.
Will traditional teeth whitening still work after internal bleaching?
Yes, traditional whitening can still be used after internal bleaching, especially if you want to further brighten the surrounding teeth. The two approaches often work together, with internal bleaching correcting the darker tooth and external whitening enhancing the overall smile. Our team can help sequence treatments appropriately so you achieve a balanced, natural-looking result.
Does internal dental bleaching make your teeth more sensitive?
Internal bleaching typically causes less overall sensitivity than external whitening because it targets a single tooth rather than the entire smile. Some patients may notice mild, temporary sensitivity, but it is usually short-lived. Our team will monitor your response and make adjustments if needed to keep the process as comfortable as possible.
